Sinauer Associates Electronic Mail Policy

File size: For the health of our server, Sinauer Associates' mail server does not accept messages greater than 5 MB in size. As a rule of thumb, if you need to send a message which is too large to fit on a floppy disk (about 1.5 MB) you should ask your contact at Sinauer Associates about use of our FTP server, which has a much higher file size limit.

Spam: Sinauer Associates does not tolerate unsolicited bulk email or unsolicited commercial email sent to users of our mail servers. Such "spam" unfairly transfers the cost of advertising from the advertiser to the unwilling recipient; it also places an unacceptable load on the resources of our mail server and the time of our employees. For these reasons, we employ a number of software solutions towards eliminating spam from our system.

First, we use "access lists" compiled locally from the spam we receive to eliminate further mail from those sources. Second, we use public "block lists" maintained by spam watchdog groups. Mail from sources on either of those lists will be rejected outright by our server—we do not receive a copy, let alone retain it. Legitimate email mistakenly refused for these reasons should see a "bounce" message. If you were directed to this page by such a bounce message, check the block lists we're currently using to find out what reasons are given for your listing:

Other lists which we have used in the past, or are considering using in the future:

If your mail was bounced by our local access list, or if you need help getting off the lists cited above, please use a third-party mail service such as hotmail.com or yahoo.com to contact admin@sinauer.com for more help.

If mail is received by our mail server, we reserve the right to filter on the complete text of the message (body and headers) and tag and/or delete messages we consider spam before delivery.

Attachments: If your mail contains attachments, be aware that we filter our mail closely for viral attachments, "bugged" HTML, and executable files. There are very few good reasons for sending HTML which will not make it through our filter, and practically no good reasons for sending executable files by email. If you absolutely must send clear HTML or an executable file to a user of Sinauer's mail server, contact admin@sinauer.com for instructions on using our FTP server instead.

We are filtering for dangerous content using The Sanitizer.
