MacClade 4: Analysis of Phylogeny and Character Evolution

David Maddison, University of Arizona and Wayne Maddison, University of British Columbia

2000
CD-ROM

About This Title

MacClade is a computer program, with accompanying manual, that provides theory and tools for the graphic and interactive analysis of molecular and morphological data, phylogeny, and character evolution. The program includes many tools for data manipulation, including molecular sequence alignment. MacClade reconstructs and displays character evolution on the phylogenetic tree, and, as the user manipulates the tree on screen, the program gives feedback via tree graphics, statistics, and charts. Systematists and other evolutionary biologists can use its flexible tools to analyze phylogeny and character evolution, yet its ease of use allows beginning students to grasp phylogenetic principles in an interactive environment.

Two distinct versions of MacClade 4 are available. The full version may be purchased on an individual basis or for simultaneous use on multiple machines (i.e., as a site license), while a special Classroom Version may be purchased under a site license arrangement only. The Classroom Version is identical to the full version of MacClade except that it allows teachers to place restrictions on those elements of each file (data, assumptions, trees, and so on) that can be edited by students. Teachers can therefore determine, on a file-by-file basis, the extent to which students can alter files.

We offer two distinct versions of the MacClade 4 site license—a Full Version and a Classroom Version. The two were identical upon publication, except for the fact that, with the Classroom Version, instructors could place restrictions on the degree to which students could manipulate the data files. Since that time, however, David Maddison has added functionality to the Full Version, via downloadable upgrades, and we expect that this will continue to happen over time.

Detailed information on MacClade 4 features is available here.

System Requirements

MacClade runs on 68K, Intel, and PowerPC Macintoshes running System 7.5 or later. MacClade will also run on the new Intel Macs running 10.4 or later. MacClade requires a CD-ROM drive, at least 4 MB of RAM, and 4 MB of hard-drive space. It may be possible to run MacClade on Windows via an emulator, but Windows is not a supported platform.

Site License Information

MacClade is also available for simultaneous use on multiple machines. For more information, download the site license agreement (classroom version or full version) and the site license fee schedule (classroom version or full version). Orders for site licenses must include a signed site license agreement, and may be faxed to: Marie Scavotto at 413-549-1118. Questions may be directed to scavotto@sinauer.com.

About the Author(s)

David R. Maddison is Professor in the Department of Entomology at the University of Arizona. He earned his M.Sc. at the University of Alberta in 1985 with G. E. Ball, and his Ph.D. at Harvard University in 1990 under E.O. Wilson. His research interests concern the evolution of beetles, especially ground beetles, as well as the theory of phylogenetic biology. Dr. Maddison is the coordinator and editor of the Tree of Life project, a multi-authored, distributed Internet project containing information about phylogeny and biodiversity.

Wayne P. Maddison is Professor and Canada Research Chair, Departments of Zoology and Botany, at the University of British Columbia. He earned his Ph.D. at Harvard University in 1988 with Herbert W. Levi. His research interests concern the theory of phylogenetic biology and the systematics and evolution of jumping spiders.

Reviews and Commentary

"MacClade is a powerful and complex program for the serious student of phylogenetic analysis and character evolution. . . . MacClade should be a part of any serious biologist's toolbox."
—Yiannis A. Ioannou, Science

"I cannot praise this software more—it is going to have a major impact on the field of evolutionary biology. Every evolutionary biologist, not only the ones interested in systematics and 'the comparative method,' will definitely want to own a copy of MacClade."
—Axel Meyer, The Quarterly Review of Biology (on MacClade 3)
