About This Title

Life has evolved from its original publication to this dramatically revitalized Eighth Edition. Life has always shown students how biology works, offering an engaging and coherent presentation of the fundamentals of biology by describing the landmark experiments that revealed them. This edition builds on those strengths and introduces several innovations.

Enduring Features

Balanced experimental coverage. Life stands out from the other introductory biology texts in that it is not simply a “laundry list” of facts, nor is it so filled with strings of experiments that it obscures the concepts students need to learn. Indeed, Life presents a balanced approach to this experimental emphasis, with 84 Experiment figures and 28 Research Methods figures.

Cutting-edge content. Life has led by incorporating emerging subdisciplines, as evidenced by Chapter 20, Development and Evolutionary Change, and Chapter 24, The Evolution of Genes and Genomes.

Innovative balloon art. Consistently praised as having the best illustration program in introductory biology, Life uses step-by-step illustrations with strategically placed balloon captions to guide students through experiments and biological processes with succinct, clear explanations.

The best media. Life continues to lead the pack with cutting-edge teaching and learning support, every component of which was created for this book alone. The new BioPortal provides a complete online gateway to all of the student and instructor resources available with Life. Extensive presentation resources allow great flexibility in incorporating engaging images, videos, and animations into the lecture. Newly updated and integrated assessment resources help instructors keep close track of student and class progress.

New to This Edition

New Authorship

David Hillis of the University of Texas at Austin adds his expertise in phylogenetics and evolution to the Eighth Edition. He wrote Chapter 24, The Evolution of Genes and Genomes, and Chapter 25, Reconstructing and Using Phylogenies, and worked closely with his coauthors on substantive revisions of the other evolution chapters and the entire Diversity unit.

The Ecology unit has been carefully reorganized and rewritten with the help of May Berenbaum of the University of Illinois, Champaign–Urbana. Based on her guidance and additional feedback from six other distinguished ecologists who also teach introductory biology, the revised Ecology unit provides more extensive and better integrated coverage of the key concerns of today’s practicing ecologists.

New Content

Consistent with prior editions’ acclaimed focus on the process of discovery, significant new research findings are presented in the new edition. Examples:

New Pedagogy

Many striking new pedagogical features make the text more engaging, more accessible, and easier to review:

eBook

(ebooks.bfwpub.com/life8e)

The Life, Eighth Edition eBook is a powerful online version of the textbook. The eBook is available at a substantial cost savings to the student and is enhanced with many integrated media resources to make the learning experience as rich as possible. All the student animations, activities, and quizzes are included throughout the text and in-text quiz questions appear in context, helping to keep the student actively engaged. Interface features such as highlighting, notes, bookmarks, and search make the eBook easy to study from. Chapter summaries are transformed into activities by making key concepts fill-in-the-blanks or multiple choice, providing an active rather than a passive review of the chapter. All key terms are linked to their glossary definitions, with audio pronunciations.

Instructors can customize the Life eBook for their course in a variety of ways. The in-text Notes feature allows instructors to insert their own text, images, Web links, videos, and more on any page of the eBook. These notes are instantly visible to any students enrolled in the instructor’s class. The eBook can also be customized at the chapter and section level—instructors can select the chapters they want to use and can insert their own sections of text directly into the eBook, providing complete flexibility to match different course syllabi.
